FF: Family Movie Night

One of the greatest things about Summer is three months of no-school nights! Hooray! We're sure you're filling some of those carefree nights with movie parties; we want to know:

What are you watching?

I remember watching Swiss Family Robinson with my whole family as a little girl and I thought it was so magical!

What should be on our "must see" list for family movie nights?

The Sound of Music! My kids adore this movie and I never get tired of hearing them sing the songs as they play around the house.

Any of the old Disney live action movies would be fun, like The Parent Trap with Haley Mills, The Love Bug, or The Shaggy Dog are all good options. They've all been remade, but go with the originals... they're much more fun!

When we were little we had one of those old projectors with the reels. We would always watch Bed Knobs and Broomsticks. I have to throw in Goonies and The Princess Bride! Undercover Blues is one my husband and I are introducing to our kids.

My family and I love all of the musicals! The best part is hearing my kids sing the songs later. It is the cutest thing.

Typo. Sorry for the re-post.

I forgot about Parent Trap - I loved that movie as a kid. Yours, mine, and Ours is also a fun one and The King and I has great music too.

The Neverending Story, Labyrinth (cannot get over Bowie in those spandex pants! haha), and The Princess Bride are my top three favs.

The Sandlot was a favorite of my family's growing up, the teenagers all liked it just as well as the younger kids.

My girls love musicals. We've watched Oklahoma and Mama Mia a bunch. Mama Mia passes because the story goes over their heads, but that won't happen for long. We just watched Grease the other day and my 10 year old was still clueless. I'm SO glad because I forgot it was a little naughty. I was so naive when I saw it years ago that I didn't know it was bad. Yikes! My favorite non-musical by far is The Incredibles.

Little orphan Annie! Cracks me up to hear my 3 year-old singing, "It's a hard knock life!"

Chitty chitty bang bang, Singing in the rain, Oklahoma, 7 brides for seven brothers, west side story, Fiddler on the roof! just to name a few.
I'd say that anything with music is ideal for family.

We LOVED Across the Great Divide. Also The Wilderness Family and its sequel are in the same vein. Very exciting stuff.

We've been doing weekend family movie nights for about three years now. Some of our bigger successes: My kids cracked up at "The Absent-Minded Professor" (this is not to be confused with the stupid Robin Williams remake) and also loved Mary Poppins. We also watched the original Dr. Doolittle, which is so weird (giant pink snail shell?). The Gnome-Mobile, all the Herbies, and Singin' In the Rain were lots of fun. I have yet to do Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Wizard of Oz because I think they will be scared of the villains, which are pretty scary for the younger crowd. They were also surprisingly into some very early John Wayne westerns (really early!) and also Bringing Up Baby (with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn and a leopard, hilarious) and Danny Kaye in the Court Jester. National Velvet was much better than My Friend Flicka, but my kids liked both. I guess I'm a teeny bit of an old movie buff but my kids loved these as much as I did when I was a kid. I appreciate the smarter dialogue and that most of these films don't talk down to kids and pander to them like so many "kid movies". They don't rely on a ton of special effects and frantic action to be entertaining, which I like. I have done my share of sitting through garbage like the Chipmunks the Squeakwel (aaaack!) and (selfishly?) I try to find movies that will appeal to all of us so I don't have to kill myself half way through.
