Teach Your Child to Read--Hooked on Phonics

Like I said, the only thing we don't love about Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is that it's mostly black and white-- a little bit text-bookish. If you have a child who wants more bells and whistles, let me suggest:

Hooked on Phonics

I have several friends who have used Hooked on Phonics in their homeschooling, and they have raved about it. Here's what's great about it--it's a solid program (with a great reputation). A strong phonemic understanding is so critical to becoming a confident reader. And it's colorful and fun. For example, the pre-K kit comes with a storybook, flashcards, interactive CDs, progress posters with stickers, and so on.

If this seems more your style, check it out here:

Phonics are so important and I personally use a lot of similar techniques in my early childhood classroom. However, I think it is important when you talk about teaching reading to remember the entire picture. We must remember that reading is not only phonics, but also whole language (reading, writing, language, etc.) I think that when teaching reading we need to incorporate all of language.

Over the years the pendulum seems to swing back and forth between phonics and whole language. Perhaps the best answer is somewhere in the middle.
