Friday Forum: Dream House Edition

Do you ever daydream about your dream house? Perhaps you've taken it to the next level of keeping an actual file of "someday ideas?" After living in several dwellings (apartments, homes, basements) I'm accumulating a running list of features that I would feel very strongly about in our next home.

A few of them are:

A completely seamless kitchen sink - what do they call that? Undermounted? (No grout!)

A super-awesome laundry room

A big yard - mostly flat, lots of grass

And an eating area that's not carpeted

I could go on for days about preferences, but I'll stop. Because now I reeaaalllyy want to hear your thoughts on this matter (both your practical ones and your wildest dream ones). What are you insisting on in your next dwelling? What are you hoping for in your "someday house?"

We're probably going to be moving in the next year or so, so I have been thinking about this some. : ) I would like a kitchen that is big enough to hold our family dining table - right now it's in a separate room which works ... but I would love to be all together - kids at the table working on things while I work in the kitchen. More natural light/windows in our next home. And, totally not necessary, but would be thoroughly enjoyed - a screened in porch. :) I need to start a picture file of ideas myself!

My "someday house" will have a fruit orchard outside, an amazingly large garden, a fruit/canning room, a workout room, and a bowling alley (1 lane). I also love the idea of a seamless sink like you with a tremendous amount of cabinets. Oh . . . to dream.

Hmmm. A BIG pantry. An awesome laundry room. A big yard with SOFT grass. A craft room where I could leave my projects lying around without the fear that a child would get to them. At least one fruit tree. I think I could go on for a while!

I want a cozy home, where everything has a place and is in it, and a nice farm sink in my kitchen. Those farm sinks make my mouth water. :)

I used to dream about my "dream home" all the time. In fact, since the age of 10, I've spent a lot of time designing homes, and here's what I've realized: keep the list short. What's more important: getting your "dream home"? Or living somewhere comfortable, that's not perfect, but that's affordable, large enough to house everyone, but small enough to keep clean (and not feel like everyone is living separate lives in a McMansion)? The most important thing about a house are the "bones" or the floorplan. Do you want something open? Kids bedrooms separated from the Master? Do you NEED a separate dining room, or will it just gather dust? Who cares if the kitchen sink isn't exactly what you want... if the dressings of the house aren't perfect, it's changeable. Perfection from the get-go often costs way to much money, and then you'll spend too much time sulking about how you'll be happy when....

Just found Bloom yesterday and I am already in love!

I don't know what they call those sinks that you want, but I have one and it is great! I can just sweep all the crumbs right in it - so easy.

I would love an eat-in kitchen some day but I want the table to be a little built-in booth. I also really want a window seat or two in the house for reading. So fun to dream!

My dreams right now are pretty simple - a garage, a coat closet and a second bathroom. I can't get past those to really dream big.

Amen, Jennifer! I want a washer/dryer, a pantry, a second bedroom, and enough storage to fit all my outdoor gear out of sight. I can't think beyond that at the moment. :)

Two laundry rooms, a reading nook/library area, an finished and cozy attic, and an orchard and garden with NO fire ants to bite my ankles (oh, living in the South!).

My "someday" house would have a huge front porch, a wine cellar, and a little garden cottage with a craft room & office inside. But, my current house is wonderful and I really don't want to move anytime soon. The one thing I want to add is a patio for enjoying summer evenings.

A luxurious guest room! Ours is nice now, but pretty small and shares our bathroom. I want my guests to feel extremely comfortable....like they're on vacation in my sanctuary of a guest room :) slippers, bathrobes, sweet devotional books, fresh flowers and all....

My husband and I recently started looking to buy a new home and we were so surprised by how much we didn't like the big, open homes. We ended up buying a modest sized older (1923) home packed full of character and with lots of great smaller spaces,an open kitchen/eating space, and a nice big yard. It does have a functioning laundry shoot, which I am pretty excited about!

My dream home would (will?) have a spacious room with shelves with lips to store my food storage in/on, a garage with lots of storage space for all our gear, and a craft room or nook for me, so I can leave my projects in mid-stream and be able to come back to it! :)

Alas, I live in a townhouse, where our food storage takes up the biggest bedroom, and our kidlets have to still share a room with each other...someday...

Trees!!! My soul aches every time I go out into our suburban backyard and I look at the teeny little trees we planted when we moved here four years ago. I really, really, really want lots of trees. Everywhere. And a big backyard patio (preferably bluestone-flagged) for entertaining and al fresco meals.

For me, it's a library, a crafty room/office, and a mud room. For Taylor, it's an awesome outdoor kitchen. It's fun to dream...

I actually live in my dream house. I'm sure it wouldn't be everyone's dream house, but it's mine. It's big enough for a large family to live in comfortably and not need to move again as my kids get older. A bonus room for a playroom has been the best, and my favorite part of that room is the door (I can close it at the end of the day and pretend that the mess of toys doesn't exist.). I love our open loft area for computers, as I think it's wise to keep computer usage in common space, when possible. A walk-in pantry and a "spider" staircase are plusses. Most of all, my kids love our big backyard! We realized at this point in our lives that finishes are sure a lot less important than functionality and fun. When the kids are happy playing in the yard so that I can make dinner, I don't care much whether the stove I'm cooking on is stainless steel or white! Being content with what we have is a good feeling.
